Child abuse and neglect lead to the deaths of an estimated 1,770 children every year in the United States. Countless more children suffer serious, near-death injuries from maltreatment. Through the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA), the federal government has acknowledged the importance played by the public disclosure of these cases in alleviating systemic problems that may unnecessarily lead to these deaths. Regrettably, many states fail to adequately shine the CAPTA-mandated light on these gravest of cases. This second edition of our acclaimed national survey evaluates each state's performance regarding their level of transparency with respect to the information released to the public following child abuse fatalities and near-fatalities. The report aims to promote public awareness regarding this issue and to catalyze state-wide and national legislative reform in order to better protect maltreated children and save their lives. We will also be highlighting important federal legislation, the Protect Our Kids Act, which has been introduced in both the House and the Senate that will work towards improving data collection and reporting and ultimately lowering rates of child abuse fatalities.

Affordable Care, Affordable Housing, The Supreme Court, and You.

On March 26th through March 28th the Supreme Court of the United States will hear oral arguments on the constitutionality of the minimum coverage provision, the expansion of Medicaid, and other aspects of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Visibility events will take place each day focused on a different constituency and core health care argument that showcases how the law is working. If you are in the D.C. area, please join ECM and hundreds of other organizations and individuals to let everyone know the ACA works for kids and is benefitting millions every day. Take Action: Urge Your House Member to Sign Letter to House Ag Committee Protecting SNAP and Other Nutrition Programs.

Now that the Super Committee has failed to reach an agreement on deficit reduction, action shifts to the House and Senate Agriculture Committees to develop a Farm Bill. Reps. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and James McGovern (D-MA) are circulating a Dear Colleague letter urging the House Agriculture Committee to protect SNAP and other low-income nutrition programs as it considers options for the next farm bill.
